My survival was, medically speaking, a statistical outlier. Surviving without lasting physical or cognitive impairment made the story even more remarkable. I am pro-science and pro-medicine. I hold two master’s degrees and a doctorate from Vanderbilt, and I love science, math, medicine, technology, and the people who study and apply them. I am also a disciple of Jesus Christ and serve as a deacon, Gideon, Bible teacher, and counselor. My story does not ask people to choose between serious science and serious faith.
